The Memorial
Park to Empire Street Trail is planned to connect the Glenbrook
Shopping Center with Memorial Park. The completed section
of trail is one mile long, and extends from Race Street to
the lower Empire Mine parking lot on Empire Street.
This trail, climbing through land greatly disturbed by previous
mining, abounds with non-native plants, including vinca and
Scotch broom. Leaving the brushy areas, the trail enters a
young ponderosa pine forest sprinkled with cherry and chestnut
trees, neither native to the area. The trail crosses Empire
Cross Road, then turns south, climbing through more mine disturbance,
and passing by a huge pile of mine tailings, before reaching
the parking lot.
ACCESS
Access from Empire Street is through the walkway at the side
of the parking lot gate and down to the lower left corner
of the parking area.
From Memorial Park, follow the paved driveway next to the
tennis courts until the road begins to climb. The trail forks
to the left at this point, leaving the driveway. |
